As a statement of intent though, Sonic Mania makes a great case for allowing them to do so next time round. All in all, Sonic Mania Plus wasn’t made for me, the casual fan that had more fun on the GBA than anything else. This one was made for the fans, the players that replay these games frequently and are aware of the subtle design choices and secrets.
Part of the reason why trying to rank the Sonic games would get out of hand very quickly is because of the preponderance of handheld titles. For this list, we’re keeping it to major games released on consoles. This one hurt a little bit because it means excluding one of my favorite Sonic games, Sonic Triple Trouble, which was only released on the Game Gear.
They held a competition within the company, which got them a bunch of characters to choose from, including this Teddy Roosevelt-looking man in pajamas who was ultimately used as the basis for Sonic’s nemesis, Dr. Eggman. But since 1991, the classic Sega video game character has gone through many other changes. Bowser and Peach are the only playable Mario characters to change their voice actor play sonic games during the series . Conversely, Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega are the only playable Sonic characters to keep their English voice actor in every installment . The fourth game, however, was published by Nintendo outside of Japan rather than Sega.

Sonic Origins lets you play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles throughout all four games giving you the opportunity to beat Metal Sonic as Knuckles or fly through Green Hill Zone as Tails. While Sega has given fans umpteen bundles of the first three Sonic games, Sonic CD hasn’t seen a proper re-release since 2011. No word yet on if this version of the game will feature the US or Japanese version of its soundtrack.
- After each zone is completed, the player faces the final boss, Dr. Eggman.
- Mania Mode is the standard way to play the game, where you choose your character and play through each zone in order.
- Sega, Sonic fans have proven we will open our wallets for anything, don’t make this harder than it has to be.
- You’ll unlock a variety of new moves around the way, and while some of them feel a bit too similar to each other, many of them actually are a lot of fun to use.
Sonic Chronicles was produced between the public bed-wetting of Sonic 2006 and the minor course correction of Sonic Unleashed, when it wasn’t yet totally clear that a narrative-heavy Sonic was an inherently crummy idea. Falling into that trap, Chronicles started by taking Sonic’s 15 years worth of stand-alone adventures and recasted them as chapters of a single epic story. As Sega showed from past trailers, Sonic Frontiers will have puzzles and combat elements in the Open Zone. The puzzles will be optional for the most part, since the main focus is ultimately on speed.

While fine most of the time, you’ll regularly run into areas where the camera shifts from 2D to 3D or locks onto something because it thinks you’ll want to engage with it. If you don’t, however, this just makes getting back to what you wanted to do frustrating. I also eventually found these islands being so filled with things to do less engaging than I did in the early going. While exploring can be a lot of fun, it’s also way too easy to step on an unintended speed booster because they’re everywhere. This can send you flying off wildly in the wrong direction, and it isn’t always easy to get back. Even when you go where you’re trying to, Sonic Frontiers also struggles to keep up with its ambition.
Granted, a lot of times, those experiments don’t go to plan, but some of them are just unique enough to be worthy of merit. Sonic Unleashed sees Eggman enact a new plot to try and take down Sonic, turning him into a Werehog. This gives Sonic Unleashed two distinct playstyles, with daytime Sonic dashing through 3D levels with incredible speed, providing some of the biggest highlights in 3D Sonic’s entire career. Despite being one of the most recognisable mascots in all of gaming, the blue blur that is Sonic The Hedgehog hasn’t exactly had the most amazing time of it in recent years. There’s been dozens of different Sonic and Sonic related games over the years, but it’s undeniable that not all of them were actually good.
